I just stumbled upon a YouTube video titled “Don’t Say Gay” which consists of a guy having an accident while skateboarding, and blaming his equipment by calling them ‘gay’. He’s then approached by a younger guy who puts him right. It’s cute and very funny, but makes a serious point.
I guess it’s something most people have said at some point: “Oh that’s so gay”. But do we really think about what we are saying? Is it right to associate ‘gay’ with ‘bad’? Surely that cannot be a great thing for gay equality.
I have to admit, I used to get really annoyed when I heard the word ‘gay’ used in this way, but became desensitised to it. You see, that’s the problem. The more we allow it to be used, the more we become desensitised to the fact that, people are using a sexuality to mean something bad, thus providing the perfect conditions for homophobia to grow.
Stamp out homophobia by eradicating it from its roots. Don’t say gay …unless you mean it 😉
